I’ve spent the past week immersed in Yashica Dutt’s powerful book, “Coming Out as a Dalit.” It’s a profound exploration of the inner strength required to challenge the injustices of casteism. The book delves into the brutal history of oppression, social exclusion, and financial deprivation faced by the Dalit community in India.
In Kerala, the experiences of Avarnas at the hands of Savarnas have been particularly distressing, even hard to believe for many of us. It May feel like many of our history books are lies.Indeed, the reason is so obvious. Despite limitations, many activists have raised their voices, demanding political solidarity from allies. It’s clear that those who strive for progress have a moral obligation to break the silence and combat all forms of discrimination and oppression.
Understanding our roots from psychological and scientific perspectives is crucial. Recent events, Even like those involving Actor Suresh Gopi, highlight the existence of inequality and privilege. Even though some deny it. Casteism has inflicted deep psychological wounds on Dalits, leading to depression, anger, and self-hatred. It’s imperative to support Dalits in their ongoing struggle for dignity and rights, given the trauma passed down to them through generations.
Let’s be allies and stand united in the fight against inequality( with some scientific temper in hand). Our generation must believe in progress and unity. I strongly recommend reading Yashica Dutt’s book as a starting point for anyone interested.
